Heisman Dream Alive And Wells?
Make no mistake about it, Chris Wells' highest priority is to help the Buckeyes win a national title. If OSU brings home the championship trophy this season, he will not view that as a consolation prize.
But the Ohio State running back is a rare specimen, one of the few players who will admit to dreaming about winning a Heisman.
Now, for the sake of getting the Scarlet and Gray to Miami this January, he may have to sacrifice a trip to New York this December.
If Wells sits out Saturday in order for his injured foot to heal, he will miss going up against an Ohio defense that gave up 160 yards (an average of 4.0 yards per carry) to Wyoming.
He'll miss a chance to impress Heisman voters, who seem mostly inclined to award their prize to a quarterback. Consider that over the past thirteen seasons, 8 quarterbacks have snagged a Heisman. There have been half that many running backs who have been winners. (There was also one cornerback thrown in: Charles Woodson, in 1997.)
Finally, he'll miss an opportunity to show those who believe the Heisman is a lifetime achievement award. Signal caller Tim Tebow may have won as a sophomore last year, but the last running back to win the award as a junior was Barry Sanders back in 1988.
But if all that means he won't miss Ohio State's key game against USC, Chris Wells will probably think it was worth it.
