To Beanie or Not to Beanie?
The speculation on Beanie Wells status ranges all the way from, "He's fine. He could win Dancing with the Stars if he wanted," to "He could miss the rest of the season."
Whether the confusion is intended, or not, Coach Jim Tressel could benefit from the fact that USC doesn't know if they'll see OSU's star running back. Although, that comes with a HUGE caveat.
How are the OSU players handling the speculation?
It's probably obvious enough by now. This game has enormous implications for the Scarlet and Gray. Receiver Brian Hartline correctly pointed out that OSU is being held to a higher standard and will likely have to win all their games to end up playing for the national title.
For a majority of college football fans, a loss will only confirm that the Buckeyes are a fraud. Or as former Ohio State running back and Heisman trophy winner, Eddie George, told the Columbus Dispatch, "The Trojans have circled this date on their schedule for the last year. They are pumped. They want to deliver the death blow to our program, to the reputation of it. They want to show, finally, that Ohio State cannot compete with anybody outside of their conference."
With that as the backdrop and with all that is at stake this weekend, it has to be hard for the Buckeye football players to wonder how healthy Beanie is.
There have been a few people wondering whether Tressel has been throwing up a smoke screen. They think he's using vague injury reports in order to wheel Wells in as a sort of-excuse the pun-Trojan Horse and then use him in a surprise attack.
The idea, though, that Tressel would allow his players to go through all the ups and downs that would naturally accompany the widely diverging reports on Beanie's toe? To use a word that is steadily becoming a swear word in Columbus, it's "doubtful."
